GARFIELD COUNTY, CO – The County Road 108 (Thompson Creek Road) bridge near Carbondale is reopening to all traffic, following final repairs to the main deck. The bridge was paved Monday, July 13, completing the repair work early and allowing the bridge to reopen 10 days ahead of schedule.

The county contracted with Con-Sy, Inc. to perform the repair work. In April, a large pothole had appeared on the bridge, and the corrugated metal decking showed corrosion and some eroded welds, which led to a “bounce” when vehicles passed over, necessitating the repair work.

“We are very pleased with the completed bridge deck replacement and speed of work that the Con-Sy teams accomplished, and appreciate rapid engineer reviews, as well as great work and staff support it took from county teams to facilitate completion of this project,” said Garfield County Deputy Manager Rob Hanna.

“It was rebuilt to meet greater use for the public in just two months, and almost two weeks ahead of our projected schedule, for which we accomplished for the community,” he said.

The new deck features a higher gauge steel than the previous one, and was constructed to modern standards of bridge construction, a great boost for longevity of the 75-year-old structure.

Garfield County thanks the public for its patience during repairs and the road closure.

Rebar arrived and full installation was completed for the south side curb of the County Road 108 Thompson Creek bridge. Concrete arrives Monday for pouring the curb in the forms built and set by workers. Following the curing of the concrete for the south side curb, the railing will be installed.

Asphalt paving will be scheduled after the curb is completed.

Crews working on the Thompson Creek bridge set concrete forms in place Thursday and will install rebar next week for the new concrete curb on the south side. The forms are expected to be completed by the end of the day Friday to be ready for pouring the concrete curb next week.

The deck welding is complete and concrete has been poured to fill ridges in the steel in preparation for installation of the waterproof membrane.

Wednesday, workers welded heavy gauge steel panels into place for the south lane of the Thompson Creek bridge, after also removing the exposed aged steel deck. The new steel decking installation will continue this week as crews navigate caution over the open spaces above the span of the bridge girders over Thompson Creek. The panels extend under where the south side curb will be placed, providing a strengthened deck for the curb and re-installation of the rail.

Crews working on the bridge over Thompson Creek near Carbondale have removed asphalt from the south lane. The bridge engineer found that the south side curb concrete required replacement, a part of the original plan for the project. The railing is being removed for re-installation when concrete is poured to make a new curb. The north side curb had not sustained weathering to the same degree as the south side.

Wednesday, workers will begin welding the steel decking into place for the south lane. The timeline for completion is expected to be July 24.
